Thank you to our Outgoing Cubmaster Dan Betts…

Pack 471 –

I guess we have finally turned a corner, the weather is getting HOT!!!  So, we know it is summer and changes are occurring.  One of those changes is the stepping down of our Cubmaster, Dan Betts.

I want to take this opportunity to say thank you Dan!  Dan has been an incredible leader by being a guide not only in our Pack but also in our lives.  Dan is a stand up gentleman that we all can learn from and his leadership will be greatly missed.  Thank goodness he has agreed to volunteer as the Assistant Cubmaster.  So, as you can imagine, he will be leaned on more than he is expecting.

As the Cubmaster, Dan has developed a recruitment plan (along with the pack committee), guided and supported the den leaders, made sure all appropriate training was being completed by him and other leaders, helped to make sure the boys understand scouting and advanced to the next level, helped to make sure that we had an exciting year round program, supported the policies of the BSA and much much much more all while having a full time job.   Fortunately for us he has a supportive wife and family because the hours he has given cannot be counted; and I am sure he does not want to know.

Once again – We say thank you Dan!

Memorial Day Flag Ceremony – Marietta National Cemetery – May 25th, 8:00 a.m.

This weekend is the Memorial Day Flag Ceremony at the Marietta National Cemetery.  Pack 471 has been participating in this event for several years and it is one of the most impactful events of the year.  The heart of the ceremony is when scouts place flags in front of grave markers of our nation’s veterans and salute the soldier and their sacrifice to our country and our freedom.  While most of the  rest of the year is about fun and achievements, this day is about honor and values.

Please join us on Saturday May 25, 2013 at the Marietta National Cemetery at 500 Washington Ave NE, Marietta, GA.  Pack  471 will meet about 40 yards in from the main gate at the Northwest corner of the cemetery starting at 8:00 AM.  Come early as once the flag placements start, it will take less than one hour to place flags on all the markers.

Parking is very limited and  they suggest parking at the Public Library on Roswell Street but if you come early there is some parking near the main gate.

Scouts must wear their Class A Uniform for this event.  There is a lot of walking and the standard footwear is also required  (close toed shoes, no sandals or Crocs). Once we have begun, we will be placing flags for about an hour, at which point all of the headstones, nearly 18,000 of them, will have a flag placed before them.

Yours in Scouting,

Robert Payne

Going to Plan B – Hembree Park Gym at 1:00 PM

All the weather services are calling for rain throughout the launch window.

We are calling the rocket launch and going to Plan B.  Jorge Blanco, our launch control person from SOAR made the call minutes ago.  Still wearing Class A uniforms and we will have the rank crossover ceremony (bring your cameras).  Following the ceremony we will have a rotation of games in the gym for all scouts and siblings.

The event will start at 1:00 PM

We will reschedule the rocket launch for a sunny day.

T-7 Hours to Launch

Now I know what it is like for NASA to be sitting waiting for a weather window with a rocket fueled and ready to go.

Updated forecast for the launch window – 12:00 – 3:30 PM Sunday May 19, 2013:

Partly to mostly cloudy with a chance of scattered thunderstorms.  Chance of precipitation 40%.  Radar indicates the recent line of storms that passed through at 4:00 AM will be clearing with the sun peaking through until later tonight.  There is a good chance for launch.

Again remember that there will be a Pack Meeting today whether it is the Rocket Launch or the Gym games at Hembree Park Gym.

Plan A:  Rocket Launch at Garrard Park starting at 12:00 PM

Plan B:  If it is raining at 12:00 PM, we will begin our Pack Meeting at 1:00 PM at Hembree Park Gym (Note:  this is not the same place we were at for the Pinewood Derby).

Hebree Park is located at:  850 Hembree Raod, Roswell, GA

-Astronauts should report to the ready room in preparation for launch-

New Plans for Rocket Launch – Game on!

Plan A:  Rocket Launch on as scheduled from 12:00 – 3:00 PM at  Garrard Landing Park

Plan B: If it is Raining at 12:00 PM meet at Hembree Park Gym for the Gym Games and Rank Cross-over

OK!  I was feeling really sad we were not going to have the rocket launch.  I then called Jorge  from SOAR, Southern Area Rocketry Club, and he said he has been at the Boy Scout Camporee all day launching rockets at Bert Adams.  He said that today was supposed to be the worst of both days this weekend and the scouts there were having a great time.

Den Leaders please check in with your Den members to tell them the plans.  I am anxious to see all the rockets that have been made.

Dan Betts, Cubmaster.

Change in location for Rocket Launch – Come at 1:00 PM
